Making It Look Good with Angus and Grace

Making clothes with an option for golf. An interview with Angus & Grace Go Golfing's Matthew Burns.
by Michael Williams

There are new golf brands popping up everywhere, but few match the design focus of Sydney’s Angus & Grace Go Golfing. This men’s and women’s label is making us rethink our specialized wardrobe—shifting the focus to well-designed pieces with the flexibility to fit into daily life. Founder Matthew Burns cut his teeth at cult favorite P. Johnson Tailors in Sydney before striking out on his own with AAGGG. He didn't just slap a logo on some merch; he rebuilt the core pieces of our wardrobe with golf as an option. That translates to UPF 50+ sun protective shirts, great shorts and beautiful intarsia knits. None of it reads like tech-y golf clothes, and that's the point.

Matt is making clothes with an option for golf, and that's exactly the headspace we all want to occupy. We might not play every day, but it’s nice to know we’re ready at a moment’s notice. We caught up with Matt to talk clothes, golf, and the importance of feeling good.

The Old Ghosts: What is your perspective on golf clothes? Should they be versatile or highly specialized?

Matthew Burns: Practical! I don’t think golf clothing needs to exist in its own category. I want one wardrobe—you should be able to hug your friends, go on hot dates, hit the pub, go to work, or play a round of golf, all in the same clothes.

OG: How did you get into the clothing business?

MB: I have a fashion degree from the University of Technology Sydney, and I spent five years as a tailor at P. Johnson. That place was an education in itself. I gained a deep understanding of the business, and the customers taught me just as much as the work did. I realized that if you sell people good, quality, practical things, you’ll gain customers who genuinely love your brand.

OG: What about golf inspires you?

MB: I think the adventure of traveling and playing golf is really what gets me excited. It’s so cool to plan trips to new places and experience new things. What merch can I get? What outfits should I pack? I try my best to put together the perfect golf trip wardrobe. It’s all an adventure.

OG: You seem obsessed with the details of each item—how do you approach product design?

MB: I approach design with enthusiasm. I try to be proactive with each item we make. It’s such a bummer to buy mediocre golf clothing and that’s something I never want to do. Aesthetics are obviously important, but it’s the practical details—whether it's fabric or pockets—that give a piece purpose. Garments with purpose become your best friends, because they work with you.

OG: Last question. Would you rather score well but hit the ball poorly, or strike it well but put up a bad number?

MB: I feel like I always hit it well and score poorly hahaha. I’m not trying to win the US Open, so I may as well try and make it look good. No one cares what I shoot!
