The iconic men's shop concept is increasingly hard to find in 2026. While the AI-obsessed citizens of San Francisco might be distracted by the arms race to machine subjugation, they might not realize that they have Cable Car Clothiers, one of the best expressions of American menswear found anywhere, right there in their backyard.
San Francisco has struggled to some degree with retail over the past five or so years. It's a city filled with undeniably iconic attractions and beautiful vistas. Venture into Chinatown or watch a cable car running on the Embarcadero, and you start to realize the city is filled with glimpses of old-world charm. Cable Car is a perfectly placed expression of that same energy. Thankfully, through the support of locals and visitors, it has managed to persist in an ever-changing city.
One of SF's oldest dedicated men’s retailers, in business since 1946, it is quaint, independent, and steeped in history. The shop carries an incredible array of classic menswear brands from Barbour, Harley of Scotland, Gitman Bros., Corgi, Baracuta and Gloverall. There's also a collection of modern labels like Kamakura and Tellason that complement the classic, time-honored pieces. The selection of tailored clothes, hats, accessories, and umbrellas is unrivaled by any men's shop on the West Coast and perhaps in America.
In a city so focused on what is coming in the future, it's nice to still find spaces that appreciate the good things from the past. Cable Car is proof that tech can replicate many things, but style is not one of them.

There's a certain, lovely British bent to the shop.
